What are Capstone Projects? Is it required to complete one?

Capstone Projects let you bring a climate idea to life within a structured, supportive environment. As a project leader or team member, you'll use dedicated time, structure, and community to build something real. You can sharpen your collaboration and project-management skills, and develop talking points about your climate experience for networking and interviews.

Capstone Projects are optional — you're not required to complete one during the cohort, and you can work on a project at any point during your year of community membership. You can lead a project or join one, and you can work solo or as part of a team, depending on your idea. Even on a solo project, we'd encourage you to lean on the community for feedback.

Hear from Cole Stites Clayton, Cohort 6 Fellow, about his experience with Capstones here.

Fun fact:  While leading his previous startup, Cole joined the Fellowship as an expert guest speaker during one of our industry panels.

Capstones aren't the only way to gain applied experience or take the stage, either.
If you're working on a project, you'll have chances to share it in front of the community throughout the cohort — pitching your idea to find teammates and feedback early on, and presenting your progress at the end. And beyond projects, Fellows can take the stage by giving short talks on a topic they've developed expertise in, or helping host expert guest sessions.
